Academic Freedom in Europe: Threats and Challenges

Unter den Linden 6. Universitäts-Hauptgebäude Room: Senatssaal
Unter den Linden 6

Across the globe, researchers are increasingly facing attacks on academic freedom, or on freedom of speech more generally, ranging from threats against individuals, court cases and imprisonment to discourses delegitimizing entire disciplines and fields of research.
While Europe has recently been a major destination for academics under threat, promising a secure environment for research and life, it is by no means immune to such challenges. With populist movements and parties gaining influence in many European countries, research environments, here too, are becoming more hostile and pressure on scholars increases.
In how far are universities in Europe ready to defend academic freedom in the light of these developments? In times of mounting pressure, how can they create and safeguard productive conditions for free and critical research?
We would like to discuss these and other questions with scholars from Hungary, Turkey and Germany. Please join us for a keynote by Liviu Matei, Professor of Public Policy and Provost of Central European University, and a panel discussion with HU fellows and guests, moderated by Prof. Silvia von Steinsdorff (HU).
