Public Panel: Europe’s Moment. Franco-German Action in the Wake of an Eroding Global Order

Europe faces an unprecedented convergence of threats – to its societies and democracies, its economy, and its security. Confronted with Russia’s aggression, China’s growing geopolitical assertiveness, and an increasingly strained transatlantic relationship, the European Union must find ways to strengthen its defense, reduce strategic dependencies, and safeguard its social cohesion. At the same time, rising polarisation and the surge of Euroskeptic actors threaten the EU’s ability to act decisively.

This moment raises key questions for Europe: How can it build greater resilience amid global power shifts that challenge long-standing assumptions? This online panel will explore how France and Germany can lead in crafting a comprehensive response to these challenges. We will discuss how the EU can position itself strategically across institutional, geopolitical, and economic dimensions to prepare for current and future shocks.

We are looking forward to this online discussion with:
– Daniela Schwarzer, Executive Board Member of the Bertelsmann Stiftung
– Shahin Vallée, Senior Associate Fellow at the German Council on Foreign Relations
– Georgina Wright, Special Adviser to the President and Senior Fellow at the German Marshall Fund of the United States
Moderation: Thu Nguyen, Acting Co-Director at the Jacques Delors Centre

We cordially invite you to join this virtual conversation and look forward to the discussion with you.
