Cheap, Clean, Secure: EU Energy Policy under the Irish Council Presidency

The event is expired

The Jacques Delors Centre and the Embassy of Ireland in Berlin invite you to a discussion on Europe’s energy policy agenda, as Ireland prepares to take over the EU Council Presidency.

Europe’s energy agenda is once again being shaped by the dual challenge of acute geopolitical pressure and long-term system transformation. The war in Iran has brought energy security back to the top of the political agenda, while also increasing the urgency of structural reforms to make Europe’s energy system cleaner, more affordable, and more resilient.

Oonagh Buckley, Secretary General of Ireland’s Department of Climate, Energy and the Environment will set the scene by sharing Ireland’s perspective on the EU energy agenda ahead of its Council Presidency, before entering a moderated panel discussion with:

  • Dr Kirsten Westphal, Management Board of German Association of Energy and Water Industries (BDEW)
  • Dr Georg Zachmann, Senior Fellow at think tank Bruegel

The discussion will explore key legislative and policy priorities on the EU agenda, including accelerating the deployment of clean energy, reinforcing electricity grids, keeping subsidies temporary and targeted, expanding cross-border infrastructure, and improving the EU’s emission trading system.

The discussion will be moderated by Philipp Jäger, Senior Policy Fellow at the Jacques Delors Centre, and will include a Q&A with the audience.

The event will be held in English, and will be followed by a reception until 7:00 pm
