Iraq in the Shadow of Regional War – Political Developments Amid Regional Escalation and Internal Challenges

Panel Discussion

May 19th, 2026, 6 – 7.30 pm,
Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung, Hiroshimastr. 28, 10785 Berlin

Over the past eight weeks, the Middle East has witnessed a dramatic escalation of the political and military situation. The conflict between the United States and Israel on one side and Iran on the other has far-reaching consequences for the entire region. Away from the media spotlight, these geopolitical tensions are having a particularly significant impact on Iraq, thereby jeopardizing the period of relative political stability that has recently prevailed there.

As a neighbor of Iran, a location for international military presence, and a battleground for competing political influences, Iraq finds itself in an extremely fragile situation. Domestic power struggles, rival militias, heightened economic uncertainties, and social tensions are compounded by increasing regional pressure. Observers warn that Iraq could once again become a battleground for indirect conflicts and move to the center of geopolitical tensions.

What is the current political situation in Iraq, and how is the regional war affecting the state and society there? What geopolitical interests are being pursued in Iraq? What are the prospects for stability, democracy, and civil security in the country?

We would like to discuss these and other questions with you on Tuesday, May 19th, 2026, at 6:00 p.m., and cordially invite you to join us.
