Pop Fascism: memes, music, and the digital revival of historical extremism

Franco with glitter sunglasses. Mussolini dancing in a school corridor. Hitler celebrating like Cristiano Ronaldo. What looks like “just jokes” is, in reality, a pipeline of pop fascism.

In this webinar, we unpack how fascist symbols and dictators are smuggled into pop culture through memes, music, football fandom, AI-generated videos and nostalgic aesthetics to make extremism feel normal, funny… even desirable.

Drawing on the cross-border investigation by Maldita.es (Spain) and Facta (Italy), Coral García and Francesca Capoccia will walk us through the methodology and findings, showing how this content evolves through three phases: normalisation, acceptance and idolisation. We will explore how disinformation and conspiracy theories are embedded into viral trends, and how these narratives differ across Italy and Spain on platforms such as TikTok, X, Telegram and YouTube.

Join us to see how history is being rewritten in real time on social media and what to look for before pop fascism becomes part of everyday common sense.
