In a world marked by upheaval, the need for a stronger European defence has never been more urgent. But how can the necessary investments be mobilised and used effectively to provide a robust and efficient response to today’s security challenges?
The French Embassy in Germany and the Jacques Delors Centre at the Hertie School are pleased to invite you to discuss these pressing questions from a Franco-German perspective on October, 15th, either in person at the French embassy or via livestream.
The programme begins at 1:30 pm with opening remarks by François Delattre, Ambassador of France to Germany.
A high-level panel will explore how Europe can strengthen its defence capabilities, bringing together voices from politics and research:
- Grégory Claeys, Director of the Economics Department, Haut-Commissariat à la Stratégie et au Plan
- Thomas Röwekamp, Member of the Bundestag, Chairman of the Defence Committee
- Sabine Thillaye, Member of the National Assembly, Vice-President of the National Defence and Armed Forces Committee
- Guntram Wolff, Professor of Economics, Université libre de Bruxelles
The debate will be moderated by Monika Sus, Associate Professor of Political Science at the Polish Academy of Sciences and Research Fellow at the Hertie School’s Centre for International Security.
Together, we want to explore how European defence investments can be deployed most effectively, how synergies between France, Germany and other member states can be built and where potential pitfalls in the EU’s defence architecture may lie.
The debate will be held in English and followed by a reception. Participation is possible on-site or online upon prior registration here.
We look forward to welcoming you to this timely exchange at the intersection of research and policy.
Embassy doors open at 12:45 pm at Wilhelmstraße 69, 10117 Berlin. For security reasons, you will be asked to show a valid picture ID at the registration desk.
This Research meets Politics event is organised by the Jacques Delors Centre and the French Embassy in Berlin and part of the Pariser Platz Dialogue, a series of high-level events bringing together French and German decision-makers for an exchange of ideas throughout the year. The Pariser Platz Dialogue series is kindly supported by the German Federal Foreign Office.
